Zomato (Eternal) founder and CEO

Deepinder Goyal's story

A dated timeline of the engineer who turned a restaurant listing site into a listed company.

Deepinder Goyal prepared for JEE in Chandigarh, where he and a friend were put in the last coaching batch. He avoided hard physics books for years, then picked up a roommate's copy, got absorbed and cleared JEE on his first attempt.

He later worked at Bain & Company. On 10 July 2008 he and Pankaj Chaddah launched FoodieBay, a restaurant listing site. Goyal quit Bain in 2009, and his parents urged him to go back to a job. The company was renamed Zomato in November 2010, after Info Edge's Sanjeev Bikhchandani offered a $1 million seed round.

Zomato grew into more than 20 countries by 2015, bought Urbanspoon that year and started food delivery in India in March 2015. In January 2020 it acquired Uber Eats India. In November 2021 it pulled back from most countries except India and the UAE.

In 2024 it bought Paytm's ticketing business for about Rs 2,048 crore. In 2025 the company was renamed Eternal. For the September 2026 quarter it reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 125 crore.
