The newspaper headline that followed the biggest day of Julian Hearn's life did not call him a food tycoon. It called him an ex-labourer.
That is the detail that stuck. Reports say Hearn left school at 16 with few qualifications, and that he worked in retail and manual labour before drifting into marketing. These accounts come from press summaries, and the details deserve care. But the outline is consistent: he started with no head start.
A simple idea, a plain bag, a clear promise: a full meal you could make in a shaker.
Marketing was where he found his footing. He is reported to have held senior roles at big names in retail and food, and to have sold an earlier company in 2011. Then came the itch that every busy person knows. Why does eating well take so long?
In 2014, in Aylesbury, he started Huel. He did not formulate it himself. The recipe came from nutritionist James Collier, and the first powder reached customers in 2015. A simple idea, a plain bag, a clear promise: a full meal you could make in a shaker.
What almost nobody expected was how far the plain bag would travel. Shipping across Europe began in 2016 and to the United States by 2017. That same year James McMaster became chief executive, and Hearn stepped toward the marketing side. A founder who knows his limits is rarer than a founder who knows his product.
It was not smooth. The Advertising Standards Authority banned two ads in February 2023, and a further one featuring Steven Bartlett in August 2024 for undisclosed affiliations. In 2025 a Consumer Reports study reported elevated lead and cadmium in some products, and in September 2026 another ad was banned for implying Huel could replace all conventional food. Trust, for a food company, is the product.
The money did arrive. Revenue was £184.5m in the year to July 2023 and passed £200m the next year, with profit tripling. In March 2026 Danone agreed to buy Huel for around €1bn, and the Competition and Markets Authority cleared it in August 2026. Press reports say Hearn will take about £400m.
For a founder with no degree and no inheritance, the lesson is quiet. You do not need to invent the thing yourself. Hearn found the expert, trusted the recipe, and put his own energy where he was strongest: telling people it existed.
