Jaspreet Singh worked at Veritas Software before leaving in 2008 with Milind Borate and Ramani Kothandaraman to start Druva in Pune. Their first product, inSync, backed up laptops.
The early years were hard. Singh has said nobody wanted to buy high-end software from an unfunded company in Pune. He has also said that he could not get into NASA's offices at first. NASA later tried the product and asked for a meeting.
The team scaled back and rebuilt the product for global customers. Sequoia Capital India led the Series A in 2010. In 2012 Druva moved its headquarters to Silicon Valley and shifted to a cloud model. It added server backup in 2014 and bought CloudRanger in 2018, CloudLanes in 2019 and sfApex in 2020.
In June 2019 Druva raised 130 million dollars led by Viking Global, which made it a unicorn. Annual recurring revenue had passed 100 million dollars. In April 2021 it raised 147 million dollars at about 2 billion dollars. Druva remains private.
